Good Habits and Stability

Self-discipline, skill development, goal setting - what do these have in common? All share a reliance on the foundational skill of forming good habits. Good habits create a helpful predictability - a stability - in life…and as students learned…in robotics!

Programming a robot in a straight line from point A to point B is basic 101 stuff, right? But what if point A is now a moving target? If you don’t know where to begin, outlining the steps to get where you want to go now becomes an exercise in futility leading to self-doubt and frustration.

Observation: Our Gojos were in the habit of using their hands to aim their robot toward a desired course which left them a bit flummoxed when their result seemed to be different each time. They had unconsciously introduced an unstable point A! Success now depended upon the precision and memory of how they had previously aimed their robot.

Lesson Application: By introducing the good habit of always anchoring your robot to an easily-definable, stable point A, students’ programs became stable and predictable with higher success of reaching point B. Efficiency skyrocketed. Enthusiasm and confidence blossomed.

At steamHouse, we believe every child should have the stability and confidence to thrive. It all starts with a few good habits.
