Your Brain Has Shortcuts, and They’re Being Hacked

Before you read anything else here, run a ten-second experiment.

Think of English words that start with the letter K. Easy — kitchen, kangaroo, keep. Now think of words that have K as their third letter.

Which kind do you think is more common?

Most people say K-first, and say it quickly. The measured answer runs the other way: in ordinary English text, K turns up in the third position roughly twice as often as in the first. Ask. Bake. Like. Make. Take. Acknowledge. They were there all along. They're just harder to recall.

The mistake is more interesting than the trivia. You didn't count words — nobody carries a frequency table in their head. What you did instead was notice how easily examples came to mind and let that ease stand in for the count. K-first words arrive instantly; K-third words take excavation. Your brain read the difference in effort as a difference in frequency.

That substitution has a name. Psychologists call it the availability heuristic — Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman documented it in 1973 — but the shape matters more than the label: when you judge how common or likely something is, you don't consult statistics. You consult how easily instances come to mind.

This is a shortcut, and for most of human history it was a good one. In a world where information arrived through direct experience — your valley, your fifty people, your own two eyes — what came to mind easily really was what happened often. Ease of recall tracked reality, because the only things loaded into memory were things you had actually encountered.

The shortcut still runs faithfully. What changed is what's being loaded.

Your sense of what's common now arrives mostly through an information environment that does not filter by frequency. It filters by engagement. Vivid, alarming, emotionally charged events get covered everywhere, repeatedly, in detail; common, undramatic realities get covered almost nowhere. The shortcut reads the coverage as the count — and the reading is wrong.

Take crime. In Gallup's annual polling across most of the past three decades, a majority of Americans have said crime is rising. For most of those years, it was falling — the U.S. homicide rate in recent years runs at roughly half its early-1990s peak. That is thirty years of a false belief, held by most of the country, steadily maintained. Not because people are careless. Because every vivid individual case is news, and the denominator never is.

Here's the part that earns the word hacked. Nobody had to plan this. The systems that profit from your attention learned, through millions of small experiments, that alarming content holds you longer than representative content does. So alarming content is what gets amplified — and what floods the shortcut. The machinery that once gave you an honest read on your world now gives you a read on whatever keeps you scrolling. And it feels exactly the same from the inside. That's the hack.

You can't turn the shortcut off. You can learn to hear it. The feeling that something is suddenly everywhere — more dangerous, more common, more urgent than it used to be — is the shortcut reporting in. When it does, one question is worth the ten seconds the K experiment took: Is this actually common, or does it just feel common? Then go find the denominator. It's rarely in the feed, and it's almost always findable.

One question won't fix an engineered environment. But it opens a small gap between the feeling and the conclusion — and that gap, it turns out, is where a great deal becomes possible.
