Session Recap

This week our Google It crews had a full session of making choices.

What should we name our crew?  Which robotics equipment should we use? What missions will we tackle first? How many missions should we try to do? Will we build an Innovation Project?

Teams worked well together to talk through options and resolve conflicts. So with no further ado, may we present your newly minted 2026/27crews: Legoats, Cucumber Republic, Fiery Goats, and Golden Guacs.

Two of our teams have chosen to rock it old school with the EV3s. Two of our teams have gone for a Spike Prime bot build.

Crews spent the rest of the session planning, building, programming, and testing. We saw some great psuedo-coding and teamwork on robot routes and we tested recall on the 3Ps. Though really, there are many good P’s to include in robotics, as the team pointed out. Along with position, parts, and program….we need persistence, patience, practice and maybe a pizza party?

Speaking of parties, don’t miss out on this year’s Gourd Gala!

Friday, October 23rd
5:30 - 8:30pm

Featuring silly fall fun with goats in hats, hay bale shenanigans, and foolish food made by ghouls! Come with a costume and character prepared to compete in our Warty Gourd contest. Present your character with special moves, catch phases and see if you can best our applause-o-meter 5000.

steamHouse Commons Connection

In this session, there was a flood of decisions. That’s everyday, though, isn’t it? Hundreds of decisions being made, some on autopilot, some with more intention.

Each of the decisions our crews made may have more bearing on the future than they realize. A team name can be a rallying cry that gives that extra boost at the tournament or a symbol of belonging and bonds that last a lifetime. A choice in equipment may represent an ability to try new things. The decision to step up to tackle a big Innovation Project problem can formulate an identity of “I am someone who can think creatively and do hard things”.

Ramifications of decisions manifest down the road. And decisions are often made without consideration for or a clear-eyed view of “down the road” goals. It’s not until we come face-to-face with the outcome in direct juxtaposition to a goal that we may have that “Ah Ha! Moment”…and perhaps excitement, perhaps regret that a decision turned out the way it did - or even that we chose it in the first place!

But what if…

What if we developed a clear-eyed view of our future self? What if we could connect the decision we were making right now with the outcomes we wanted down the road?

At steamHouse, we deconstruct the monolith of a child’s future (a big, sometimes scary unknown) into one decision at a time. We take a deep look at what a decision is and how we build up our Personal Agency and Gold Star Kit of ideals, ideas, and practices to enable us to make decisions with confidence and clarity that align to the future we want for ourselves. This is authorship.

This is the unit steamHouse works in, because development doesn’t arrive on a timeline; it accumulates, decision by decision.

Stay tuned for more steamHouse connections as the season rolls on!
